At 12 years old, Wayne Ettinger growing up on a farm in central Pennsylvania was told about Horticulture by his older brother Glenn who had returned from a career day at the Pennsylvania State University . His love for plants at that age along with this new knowledge about the field of Horticulture resulted in his goal to going to Penn State and studying Horticulture.

While attending Penn State , he found out about the opportunities for teaching Horticulture at the new vocational-technical schools being built in the state. Wayne was the first Penn State Horticulture graduate to become certified to teach at the secondary school level.

After helping to develop a Horticulture program at Willow Grove , he moved to Easton to develop a new program. From there he accepted a position at the Williamsport Area Community College (now the Pennsylvania College of Technology) to develop a curriculum and begin a two year associate degree program in Horticulture. After over 18 years of teaching, he retired to devote all his energies to growing a landscaping and garden center business.

During the past 30 years, the business has grown from a part-time enterprise to a full service landscaping and garden center business with 50+ employees. Some of the original employees are still with the company. Ettingers takes pride in their large staff of educated, experienced and dedicated employees.
