Do It Yourself
Garden Center

Here you'll find tips and tricks on the right way to landscape and "Do It Yourself."

At Ettinger's Garden Center we have hundreds of trees to chose from. Stop by and find the perfect tree for your Do It Yourself weekend project.

Mulch Tip
Never pile mulch up around the trunks of your trees. Spread it around the tree to an estimated diameter of about 3 feet, then pull mulch away from the trunk to leave a small moat consisting of just a few inches around the trunk base. This will prevent damage to the bark.

Planting Tips
Trees and shrubs must be planted at the right depth and receive the right amount of water if they are to properly grow. Planting too deeply and under- or overwatering are among the most common and serious planting errors.

In well-drained soil, the planting hole should never be dug any deeper than the height of the root ball. This means that the soil at the bottom of the hole is left undisturbed. Setting the root ball on loosened soil will cause the tree to settle and sink too deeply into the soil. Locate the topmost layer of roots in the root ball so that it will be level with the soil surface. The planting hole should also be around 3 times wider than the root ball. This way the roots will grow more quickly into loosened soil.

Do It Yourself Design Services
We recognize the need that many of our customers have for the landscape project that is professionally designed, but your may want to install yourself. We provide two methods for this service.

A. If you bring your pictures and accurate measurements to the garden center, we will work with you to create your design. This consists of a rough sketch and a review of the plants in the garden center. There is no charge for this option.

B. If the project size is larger, you may wish to have an on site visit by a designer to consult with you, take measurements and prepare a detailed landscape plan. The charge for this option is determined by the estimated time it will take to develop the plan.

Payment for designs are due when the plan is reviewed with you at the garden center.

When you purchase materials from us to complete your design, you will be given a 10% discount on these purchases. This can easily defray the cost of the design.
